S. Korean Court Jails Lawmaker in Church-Funding Corruption Case
The Seoul High Court ruled that Kweon Seong-dong, a member of the main opposition People Power Party, must serve a two-year prison term after being convicted of accepting political money from an official associated with the Unification Church.
According to the findings reported in court coverage, the lawmaker allegedly received around 100 million won (approximately $68,000) from a church figure who was seeking political influence during the administration of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The case is part of a wider corruption investigation involving political figures and individuals connected to the Unification Church. Church leader Han Hak-ja is also facing separate bribery charges related to alleged dealings involving former first lady Kim Keon-hee.
Reports indicate that Han is currently in detention after a request for temporary release on health grounds was denied earlier this year.
In a related development, South Korea’s judiciary is also reviewing corruption charges against the former first lady. A lower court previously sentenced Kim to one year and eight months in prison, and the higher court is expected to issue a final ruling following ongoing proceedings.
