S. Korea’s January ICT Exports Surge to Record High

(MENAFN) South Korea's technology sector shattered January export records Thursday as artificial intelligence infrastructure investment turbocharged global demand for semiconductors, propelling shipments to unprecedented heights.

ICT product exports skyrocketed 78.5 percent year-over-year to $29.05 billion last month—the highest January figure ever recorded—data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources revealed.

Semiconductor shipments led the explosive growth, more than doubling to reach $20.55 billion as worldwide AI infrastructure buildouts triggered intensified demand and price appreciation for memory chips.

Display panel exports climbed 19.0 percent to $1.50 billion, while mobile phone shipments soared 75.1 percent to $1.76 billion during the same period.

Computer and peripheral equipment exports surged 83.7 percent to $1.71 billion, and communications equipment shipments advanced 26.7 percent to $200 million.

ICT product imports rose 20.0 percent annually to $14.09 billion in January, generating a trade surplus of $14.96 billion for the technology sector.

Inbound shipments of semiconductors, display panels, mobile devices, computers, and communications equipment all posted double-digit percentage gains last month.
